Tewaarton watch

Attackmen Jimmy Bitter and Marcus Holman, along with midfielder R.G. Keenan were selected to the 2013 Tewaaraton Award men's watch list and included as part of a group of 13 ACC student-athletes recognized by the Tewaarton Foundation.

The selection committees are made up of top collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.

Duke

No. 19 Duke fell to 2-3 on the year, while facing off against the No. 15 Penn Quakers during their season opener.

The Quakers weren't stangers to knowing how to top the Blue Devils, as they had also beater the Blue Devils when they last visited Franklin Field back in 2011.

Duke rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the first quarter, took a 7-6 advantage at the half, but struggled to score in the final 30 minutes, netting just two goals.

Jordan Wolf, Myles Jones and Josh Offit scored two goals apiece for Duke in the game.

"Penn played great and they're a great young team," said head coach John Danowski.

"They certainly put it to us."

The Blue Devils now prepare for another big matchup at home as the top-seeded Maryland Terrapins travel to Koskinen on Saturday.

High point

The High Point University men's lacrosse team took a 12-5 loss at Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Ky.
as Matt Thistle scored two goals and  Bryce Parietti tallied one goal and an assist.

"The team gave a great effort for four quarters but our midfield just couldn't do enough to limit Bellarmine in transition," said head coach Jon Torpey.

"They are one of the best transition teams we will face. We limited their opportunities at times but their experience showed in the second half. Defensively, we played well on ball but we need to improve off ball. Mitchell Dupere, Bryce Parietti and Austin Geisler played well. The team keeps getting better every day."

With the loss, the Panthers fell to 1-4 on the season and will  wrap up the three-game road trip with their next game against the Jacksonville Dolphins on Mar. 2.

The Dolphins are 0-2 with loses to No. 6 Duke and No. 19 Ohio State.

Minutemen overtake Tar Heels

UMass 12, North Carolina 11

No. 13 Massachusetts outscored No. 7 North Carolina 4-0 in the final quarter and rallied past the Tar Heels 12-11 Saturday afternoon at KSU Stadium in the third annual Southern Showdown.

Back-to-back unassisted goals by Grant Whiteway and Connor Mooney in the final five minutes capped the rally for the Minutemen who improved to 2-0 on the season while Carolina falls to 1-1.

UMass has not lost a regular season game since 2011 and continued that string with a fierce second half rally that erased a 7-4 UNC halftime lead.

A balanced scoring attack led the Minutemen as they got three goals from Kyle Smith and three from Connor Mooney.

Andrew Sokol scored twice for UMass and his two scores in the earlier stages of the fourth quarter pulled the Minutemwn with a single goal and set the stage for the late-gam heroics.

Grant Whiteway also had two goals for UMass who had seven unassisted goal amongst their total of seven.

Carolina has two goals each from Marcus Holman, Jimmy Bitter and Spencer Parks.  Carolina also relied on unassisted goal, recording four assists on 11 tallies.

Carolina ousthot the Minutemen 43-38 but UMass had the edge after halftime 22-15.

Zachary Oliveri turned in an All-America calibre performance for the Minutemen in the goal as he made 18 saves while allowing only 10 goals in 59:39.

He twice stuffed UNC game-tying efforts in the final two minutes, saving a shot by Davey Emala on a UNC extra-man opportunity with 2:07 to play and then making a save on a shot by Greg McBride with two seconds left in the match.

After jumping to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Jimmy Bitter and Spencer Parks, the Tar Heels led the entire game until Whiteway scored the tying goal with 4:16 to play.

Just 58 seconds later, Mooney scored the game-winner for UMass.

Carolina had three-goal leads on three occasions at 6-3, 7-4 and 11-8 but could never shake the Minutemen.

UMass had clawed within 9-8 late in the third quarter but goals by Spencer Parks with 1:12 to play in the third quarter and by Marcus Holman with seconds left in the period made it 11-8.

Carolina would not score again as was limited to just three shots in the opening 12 and a half minutes of the final period, a time span in which UMass claimed the lead for good.

UMass won the ground ball battle 39-38 while the Tar Heels had a slight in the face-off circle at 15-12.  Kieran Burke finished with 12 saves for the Tar Heels.

The Tar Heels will be back in action on Saturday, February 23 when they play host to Fairfield at 12 noon at Fetzer Field.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Air Force - Peter Koutroumpis, PKS Consulting LLC

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced from its offices in Greensboro, N.C. on Tuesday, that North Carolina Tar Heels attackman Marcus Holman and Duke Blue Devils midfielder Brendan Fowler were named ACC Men’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the week ending on Monday, Feb 11.

Holman is points leader

Holman led the Tar Heel attack unit which produced 10 goals and 8 assists in North Carolina’s 16-8 season-opening win over Air Force

The Tar Heels captain had two goals and six assists, the most  helpers in a game by a Tar Heel since April 12, 1997.

His eight points were just two short of his career high of 10 and matched his second highest total in his career.

Fowler wins draws, accumulates GB's

A defensive midfielder and faceoff specialist, Fowler picked up 19 ground balls and won 59 percent of his faceoffs (30-of-51) to help Duke to a 1-1 start to its season.

Against No. 8 Denver to start the season, he won 18-of-30 faceoffs and scooped a career-high 11 ground balls.

Duke 21, Jacksonville 9

The No. 4 Blue Devils bounced back from a season-opening loss to the No. 8 Denver Pioneeers on Saturday with a 21-9 win over the Jacksonville Dolphins at Koskinen Stadium on Sunday.

Attackman Jordan Wolf led Duke with four goals, totaling eight on the season in just two games played.

The Blue Devils (1-1) benefited from 15 different players tallying goals and exhibiting the 'team concept' that coach John Danowski always has his team play with.

On that note, Danowski gave all four of his goalkeepers playing time : Dan Wigrizer (3 saves in 30:00 - Starter), Kyle Turri (5 saves in 16:55), Ben Krebs (3 saves in 7:53) and Luke Aaron (1 save in 5:12).

Freshmen Case Matheis, Deemer Class, Seamus Connelly, Myles Jones, John Shaffer, and sophomore Tanner Scott all recorded their first career goals with the Blue Devils.

Duke outshot (42-38) and outworked Jacksonville, scooping up 43 GB's to the Dolphins' 33 GB's.

High Point Panthers vs. Air Force Falcons - HighPointPanthers.com, High Point Sports Information

---

Air Force 14, High Point 4

The Air Force Falcons worked out the kinks from a 16-8  loss suffered at the hands of the No. 7 North Carolina Tar Heels and put a damper on another exciting weekend of lacrosse at High Point's Vert Stadium.

The Panthers were riding high after beating the Towson Tigers 9-7 on Friday, and earning the program's first-ever win in Division 1 lacrosse competition.

The Falcons (1-1) started quickly and didn't let up on the Panthers (1-2) who got on the board during the first three quarters or play, but couldn't beat keepers Austin Fox and Doug Gouchoe during the final quarter, as they backstopped the 14-4 victory for Air Force.

Bright spots for High Point included attackman Dan Lomas (1g) and Dan Thistle (1g, 2a) continuing their three-game scoring streaks while goalkeeper Austin Geisler recorded an impressive 19 saves on 47 shots faced.

Special teams play didn't work to High Point's favor as the Panthers went 0-6 in EMO situations while the Falcons capitalized on 2-of-9 man-up situations that were afforded to them.

“Air Force is a really solid, well-coached team,” said High Point head coach Jon Torpey.

“They won every facet of the game from ground balls to time of possession. I thought we came out with a lot of energy but didn't execute well. We will spend the week practicing and getting ready for a very good St. Joseph's team.”

The Panthers prepare to play their first road game of the season on Saturday when they travel to face the St. Joseph's Hawks in a neutral-site game in Woodberry Forest, Va.

High Point takes down Towson, 9-7

High Point Panthers - Vert Stadium - Peter Koutroumpis, PKS Consulting LLC

After making an impressive start to its NCAA men's lacrosse program history last weekend, narrowly losing 12-10 to an established program in the Delaware Blue Hens, the Panthers gave the lacrosse world a jolt while many programs were preparing to faceoff for their first games of the season.

The Panthers defeated an established program in the Towson Tigers, 9-7, at Vert Stadium in High Point, N.C. on Friday.

Attackman Dan Lomas led the Panthers scoring with four goals while goalkeeper Austin Geisler made 11 saves to secure the program's first-ever victory.

Lomas has now scored a total of nine goals (4.5 goals/game) in the team's first two games of the season while Geisler's protection in the cage has solidified the team's game from the back end.

“This win feels great,” said head coach Jon

“The team played really hard today against a good Towson team. We tried to tighten up the defense and possess the ball more on offense, which were two things we had a little difficulty with against Delaware. We improved a lot in those two areas and it made a big difference.”

High Point moves to 1-1 with the win while Towson starts the season at 0-1.

The Panthers will host the Air Force Falcons on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Falcons open the 2013 season at North Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m.
